Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon or rye whiskey
- 1 sugar cube (or 1/4 oz/7 ml simple syrup)
- 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
- A splash of water (optional, to dissolve the sugar cube)
- Ice (large cube preferred)
- Garnish: Orange peel and optional maraschino cherry
Instructions:
-
Prepare the glass:
- Place the sugar cube in a rocks glass.
- Add Angostura bitters and a splash of water (if using).
-
Muddle:
- Gently muddle the sugar cube with the bitters and water until the sugar is dissolved.
-
Add whiskey:
- Pour the bourbon or rye over the sugar mixture and stir.
-
Add ice:
- Add a large ice cube or several smaller ones, then stir gently to chill and dilute the drink slightly.
-
Garnish:
- Express the oils from an orange peel by holding it over the glass and giving it a twist.
- Place the peel in the glass as a garnish.
- Optionally, add a maraschino cherry.
Tips:
- Whiskey choice: Bourbon will make the drink slightly sweeter, while rye whiskey offers a spicier profile.
- Ice: Large ice cubes or spheres are preferred as they melt slower, preserving the drink's balance.
- Sweetener: If using simple syrup instead of a sugar cube, start with 1/4 oz and adjust to taste.
